Paithani is an exclusive variety of saree named after Paithan town, Aurangabad district, Maharashtra. Paithani sarees typically have Peacock motifs in pallu, plain or checked zari border and sari body with butis or just plain solid colour. Due to proximity to Ajanta caves influence of Buddhist paintings can be seen in motifs used. Originally made only with cotton, recently more silk paithanis are made especially for export markets.
