Sungudi cotton sarees are a delightful variation of "tie and dye" Bandhani sarees of Gujarat and Rajasthan. They are very popular for their distinctive circular buti designs and bright and vibrant colours. Interestingly Sungudi came to Tamilnadu during the 17th century when artisans from Saurashtra in Gujarat migrated to Tamilnadu and settled in the Madurai region under the patronage of King Thirumalai Naicker. Of late mass made copies of Sungudi sarees made by printing Sungudi designs have appeared in the market.
